Register DD214
Eligibility for most VA benefits is based upon discharge (other than dishonorable) from active military service. Active service means full-time service as a member of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines or Coast Guard.
Eligibility of benefits depends upon individual circumstances. To apply, please contact the nearest VA regional office or call VA’s toll-free number, 1-800-827-1000. |

Changes to your DD Form 214
If you feel your military records contain an error, you may apply for a correction of your military records. Use DD Form 149, Application for Correction of Military Records, also available at a VA regional office.
You may apply for a review of your discharge. Write to the military department concerned using DD Form 293, Application for the Review of Discharge or Dismissal from the Armed Forces of the United States.

Filing Claims
If you are seeking a VA benefit for the first time, you must submit a copy of your DD Form 214 with your application for benefits.

Importance of Discharge Record
The Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty, or DD 214, is an important document all veterans must produce when applying for benefits. Having the DD 214 recorded with the local county courthouse immediately upon discharge is highly recommended whether benefits will be applied for or not. Veterans who have misplaced their copy of the DD 214 may obtain a copy from the courthouse usually free of charge. |
County Veteran Service Officers
In each of Minnesota’s counties there is an office dedicated to serving veterans. It is managed by a Minnesota County Veterans Service Officer who is certified by the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs. The county service officer is usually located in the courthouse or government center, and is a valuable initial contact for state and federal claims for veterans. |
