By: Jane Lightbourn, The Hastings Star-Gazette

The Hastings High School Military Support Group, along with the community's initiative, Beyond the Yellow Ribbon, has been recognized by Minnesota Second District Congressman John Kline at the recent Stars of the North ceremony for its unselfishness giving to our military, veterans and their families

Accepting the award for the Military Support Group was Dani Truax, and accepting the award for Beyond the Yellow Ribbon was Bob Sellars, on behalf of Dean Markuson

Through the Hastings High School Military Support Group, the students find support, friendship and ways to help members and their families

A holiday project they completed was the sending of care packages to military members They contained snacks, toiletries and socks – the items needed by the military

One of the most important donations included in the packages were hand-written messages on cards
The advisors for the high school military support group are Melissa Bezotte and Justin Hahn The group meets every other Friday at the high school The group is an important support element for the students
For Truax, it has been an important part of her life for five years — since middle school

“I didn’t know if there was such group here and it is comforting to know that others are going through the same stuff,” she said

Pete Schultz appreciates the support from other students and from the community — he specifically mentioned the Beyond the Yellow Ribbon community effort

Beyond the Yellow Ribbon has also been selected as a recipient of the Bernie McCoy Community Service Award for the 2010-11 school year The purpose of this award is to recognize an individual, agency, or organization that has exemplified support and service in the development of Community Education in Hastings School District 200

It is named in honor of McCoy, who was along-time community volunteer in the Boy Scouts, Hastings Lions and Hastings Area Senior Center
