MANKATO, Minn. -- Minnesota's not the obvious choice when picking a spot to film an Iraq war movie, but the people behind "Souvenirs" are making it work.
The producer, Craig Christiansen says the main story is set in Minnesota, so they wanted to film the entire thing in Minnesota. They're using a rock quarry in Mankato as the Iraq background. It's one you may recognize. In 2004, President George W. Bush gave a speech in that same quarry.
The movie stars Jonathan Bennett, who's best known for his role as Lindsay Lohan's crush in the hit "Mean Girls." Bennett plays Staff Sergeant Kyle Vogel, a member of the Minnesota National Guard's Red Bulls. James Cromwell, the farmer from "Babe," is also in the film, along with his look-alike son John.
The Minnesota National Guard is providing the equipment and advice. The producer says the movie could not have been made without their involvement.
The release date has not been set. The movie is still lacking a distributor.
