In 1989, Camp Ripley initiated a recycling program to reduce its output of landfill solid waste. Prior to the program's implementation, the average amount of solid waste generated was nine pounds per person, per day. Today, with the aid of a new solid waste transfer station, recycling center and a continuing effort to reduce, reuse and recycle, that number has been decreased to less than three pounds per person, per day.
