The Camp Ripley Wall
The masterfully constructed granite wall seen approaching Camp Ripley was
built under the auspices of the depression-era Work Project Administration (WPA). Work
began in 1933. By 1938, two-thirds of the
wall was erected, and work was completed in 1942. The wall is constructed of block
granite, which is dry laid and hand placed without mortar. The front gate was designed by
General Philip Bettenburg and is in the shape of the Engineer Corps crest. Notably, the
Camp Ripley wall appears to be eligible for the National Historic Register.
