History
Minnesota National Guard
Inspector General
The Minnesota Inspector General
The eyes, ears, and conscience of TAG

Mission
  • To assist Minnesota National Guard members and their families in solving service related problems and issues
  • To assess and report matters affecting mission performance, discipline, efficiency, economy, morale, training, and readiness
  • To identify systemic deficiencies, determine root causes, and recommend corrective action
  • To promote standards and core values of the Minnesota National Guard through teaching and training, inspecting, assisting, and investigating

Expectation Management

Give your chain of command a chance to solve the problem first
  • In most cases, the IG addresses issues with the chain of command for resolution
  • IGs resolve cases on the basis of fact. Documentation helps!
  • Don’t expect instant action on your request ... be patient
  • IGs only recommend, not order a resolution
  • IGs are not policy makers
  • Be honest; don’t provide misleading information
  • Be prepared to take “no” for an answer

Filing a request with an Inspector General

IGs receive requests for assistance, complaints, and allegations from Minnesota National Guard Soldiers and Airmen, family members, federal employees, veterans and private citizens from any source (including anonymous) regarding operations, organizations, functions and personal issues.

The Right to Present Complaints or Request Assistance from the IG

All Soldiers and Airmen have the right to present complaints, grievances, or requests for assistance to the Inspector General. These complaints or grievances may include what Soldiers reasonably believe to be evidence of fraud, waste, and abuse.

Assistance is the IG function that provides Soldiers, Airmen, family members, DA civilians, retirees, and contract employees the ability to seek help from the IG on matters affecting their health, welfare, and personal readiness. However, anyone may submit a complaint, allegation, or request for information or assistance to any Army IG concerning a matter of Army interest. (AR 1-20 para 6-1)
Whistleblower Protection

The Military Whistleblower Protection Act, Title 10 U.S.C. 1034, prohibits any person from taking, withholding, or threatening any personnel action against a member of the Armed Forces as reprisal for making or preparing any protected communications.

Protected Communication -
any lawful communication to a Member of Congress or an Inspector General, as well as any communication made to a person or organization designated under competent regulations to receive such communications, which a member of the Armed Forces reasonably believes reports a violation of law or regulation.

To report a case of Whistleblower Reprisal (WBR) - contact the IG.
